Book 7

Changes and Challenges

Changes and Challenges responds to the young teenager who is no longer fully a child and yet not fully launched into adolescence.

The twelfth-thirteenth year is a transitional one, where the new issues of adolescence collide with some of the old issues of childhood.

As Alice, Charles, and their friends navigate this transitional year, they deal with such issues as:

  • The relationship between freedom and responsibility
  • Belonging to a family yet growing more independent
  • Identity issues
  • Developing one’s own skills while helping others develop theirs
  • Peer relationships and peer pressure
  • Handling the budding sexuality of one’s self and one’s peers with respect and responsibility
  • Health and hygiene, including grooming, sexual matters, and mental hygiene
